PINK – IT’S HERE AGAIN!
By Mary Cusack, ASID
Did you know that the color pink is in almost all wall coverings, paintings and fabric designs? Just look! It may be a shadow or small accent – but it’s there. We all need pink in our lives even if it is just a tiny little sliver.
Pink is a happy color. It is flattering to skin tones. Rooms seem to glow when covered white mixed with just a touch of pink. Granite counter tops that are in the rosy tones can warm a kitchen.
Popular colors come and go, but generally color for interiors follow fashion trends. There are so many beautiful variations of pink – deep and intense, soft pastels and bright brilliant shades. We are wearing lots of pink. Why not put a little splash in our interiors, or even a little more. What about an entire wall! Now this does not necessarily mean girly or babyish. You guys will love some of the effects that can be achieved, and you won’t even notice the color pink. For example, Saltillo tile has beautiful variations of pink – no it does not look sissified.
Seeing lots of red dining rooms? How about trying some variation of pink! It would be spectacular with a wide stripped wall covering in shades of pink. A faux finish with a mixture of pink, coral and maybe a touch of orange could create a mysterious look. Even a rich pink ceiling can give the effect of warmth. A chandelier of wood, metal or crystal can be the finishing touch.
I have never tired of wall covering if done well. For a while it was probably overdone so now we are a little skeptical about using it. In the right spot wall covering can be absolutely breathtaking. If flowers are your thing try a design with pink, yellow and green. These colors will be in different proportions so select the dominant color you want to bring out. A large design can give the effect of a garden. White used effectively can quiet the design.
Beautiful shades of browns and pinks are so in right now. I can just imagine a bedroom with an accent wall in cinnamon brown and a beautiful pink bedcovering. The pink must be rich enough to handle the heaviness of the brown. Pink roses against the brown – what a gorgeous sight!
Dressing areas are just wonderful if some variation of pink is in the background. No not baby pink. I am thinking of a soft brown pink or pink with a tiny speck of yellow. When you see the color it will glow but yet will not be sweet.
Of course lace and pink are so frilly and beautiful. A few antiques (not heavy) or maybe white furniture with a sprinkle of flowers either real or in fabrics and pictures can be so very nice.
October is pink month – remember it represents breast cancer awareness. Take care of yourself, and your love ones.
